Richard
Cleugh was born on 4
September 1806 in Longhorsley, Northumberland, England and christened at St
Helen’s, Longhorsley on 12 October 1806, the third child of William Cleugh and
Dorothy Hunter.
Richard married Mary Elliott on 26 October 1833 at St
Helen’s, Longhorsley.
Richard, a labourer, and Mary were the parents of:

Yorkshire and was buried on 1 June 1867 at St Margaret’s, Brotton, aged 26
years;

John Cleugh born in Longhorsley and christened 17 March
1844 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley;

Robert
Cleugh born in Longhorsley
and christened 25 October 1846 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley married Jessie
Ormiston in Jul-Sep 1880 in Guisborough, North Yorks;

Cleugh born in Longhorsley
and christened 2 September 1849 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley; and
·
Francis
Cleugh born in Longhorsley
and christened 16 November 1851 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley died in Brotton, North
Yorkshire and was buried on 14 December 1873 at St Margaret’s, Brotton, aged 22
years.
Richard, Mary and family moved to
North Yorkshire some time in the 1850’s and in 1861 were in Eskdaleside where
Richard was a foreman at the Whinstone Quarry. During the 1860’s the family
moved to the High Street in Brotton, Guisborough, North Yorks. [The family was
recorded under CLEUGH in 1841 and then from 1851-1881 under the spelling
CLOUGH.]
Richard died in Brotton, North
Yorkshire and was buried on 6 May 1876 at St Margaret’s, Brotton, aged 69 years.
