James Kilgour was born on 4 June 1854 at Garden Cottage, North Shields, Northumberland, England and christened 27 August 1854 at Christ Church, Tynemouth, the seventh child of George Kilgour and Mary Chapman.
James married Janet Taylor (born 29 January 1857 in Preston, Northumberland) in Apr-Jun 1877 in Tynemouth.
